Western New York Prosperity Scholarship - Deadline Approaching!

The Prentice Family Foundation’s Western New York Prosperity Scholarship is intended for civic-minded students committed to the Western New York community. This scholarship program will assist undergraduate and graduate/professional students who are actively preparing for careers that further economic development and growth, especially in the Western New York region. Scholarship applicants will be asked to describe how their educational, civic, and professional plans will contribute directly to the economic growth and prosperity of the region and to express intent to work at some point in Western New York, thereby actively contributing to the region’s future.  Eligible students must demonstrate financial need and be pursuing studies focused on a defined professional career in the fields of engineering, business, or biomedical sciences. Scholarship recipients will utilize this 12-month scholarship (up to $25,000 per student award) to help pay for academic year expenses, to gain career-related experiences, and to offset costs associated with internship placement.

Applications must be submitted by  May 1, 2009!

Still Can’t Find an Internship? Not sure where to start? The professional staff the Cora P. Maloney College work with students to identify their needs, and to identify the skills and knowledge they would like to develop.  Additionally, they will then help students utilize a number of resources to find the perfect fit.  This is an opportunity for students to gain direct exposure to and practical experience from a diverse range of public, private, government or community service agencies and businesses locally, nationally and internationally in an effort to improve the community we live in.

Become UB101 Peer Mentor!

Do you want to develop leadership, communication and public speaking skills, gain valuable teaching experience, increase your self awareness, cultivate lasting relationships with University faculty, staff and students and become more aware of campus resources? Would you like to earn 3 credits while enhancing your resume at the same time? Apply to become a UB101 Peer Mentor for fall 2009!

UB 101 Peer Mentors are undergraduate students who serve as role models and sources of support to new students enrolled in the UB 101 class. Peer Mentors work in collaboration with a UB 101 Instructor, assisting them with class preparation and facilitating discussions within the class. As an overview, UB 101 is a course designed to assist first year students in making the transition to the University at Buffalo, providing a framework for their success as students. Through a small and interactive classroom environment intended to engage students in learning, this course focuses on providing resources, fostering important relationships, and helping students to understand their responsibilities and privileges within the University community. UB 101 classes meet once a week for 50 minutes.

To be eligible to become a Peer Mentor, you must be a currently enrolled undergraduate student at UB who will have completed at least 60 credit hours by August 2009. Peer Mentors should be in good academic standing, maintain at least a 3.0 cumulative GPA and be in good disciplinary standing. Students with at least 30 credits and/or a 2.5 GPA will still be considered in the application process and are encouraged to apply. The New Student Programs staff is looking for individuals who are representative of the diversity of the UB student community in their experiences and interests. Peer Mentor candidates should possess a variety of qualities, including (but not limited to):

  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to interact well with others within a group and individual setting
  • Awareness of UB resources
  • A willingness to take initiative
  • Pride in being a successful UB student
  • A desire to work with new students, faculty, and staff
  • Ability to problem solve
  • A willingness to learn

Apply to Become a Career Peer Advisor!

Career Services is in search of qualified students for the highly selective Career Peer Advisor Program. The program is an opportunity for undergraduate students to develop presentation, resume writing/critiquing, and helping skills. During the first semester, students will earn 3 internship credits and will have the opportunity to be paid in the second semester. This program is open to all majors but may be particularly beneficial for students interested in careers in counseling, teaching, human resources, and higher education.

They are looking for students with good writing and communication skills, and a GPA of 3.0 or above. Junior or senior standing is preferred at the start of the fall 2009 semester, unless you are a star sophomore candidate! Students also must be willing to give a full year (2 semester) commitment. Apply to Become A UB STAR!

If you have pride in UB this is the position for you! Help recruit students to UB while gaining some public relations experience. Consider applying to UB STARS (STudent Admissions Recruitment Speacialists), a highly selective volunteer organization that is currently recruiting new students for next year.

STARS are a select group of approximately 50 students who assist the Office of Admissions in the promotion of UB to prospective students, their parents and the high school guidance community. The UB STARS return to their high schools to give presentations about UB, help UB at important admissions events such as Open House, and staff the Office of Admissions screen name, UBADMIT, answering questions potential students and their parents have about UB. A dynamic public relations organization, UB STARS is a vitally important aspect in UB’s recruitment efforts.

If you’d like more information and to talk to a current STAR about the program, there will table days in the Student Union on February 18, 23, and 26, or you can IM them at their screen name UBADMIT anytime between 9 am and 5 pm. Apply Now for the S.A.G.E Internship Program!

The purpose of S.A.G.E. (Success through Access to Guidance and Experience) is to encourage a diverse group of outstanding UB undergraduate students who demonstrate that they have overcome a disadvantage or impediment to success in higher education to pursue graduate studies, to enter a career in Higher Education or another specific career field. S.A.G.E. interns are provided the unique opportunity to obtain a paid internship position, mentorship, networking and guidance related to their educational and career goals while they are gain professional development skills and relatable work experience in their area of interest. Each S.A.G.E. intern participates in a 10 hour per week internship related to their educational and career goals and works with a supervisor who will act as a mentor. Students can receive a stipend up to $1,400 for the academic year.

To be eligible for the S.A.G.E. internship program you must be in junior or senior status (minimum 60 credits earned) by Fall 2009, have a minimum 2.50 cumulative GPA, be a U.S. Citizen/Permanent Resident, and a current member of an underrepresented student population including, but not limited to: race, ethnicity, socio-economic status, disability status, and sexual orientation.
